We are seeking a qualified and suitably experienced Environmental Health Officer to help deliver environmental health services to the people and businesses of Orkney.

Reporting directly to the Service Manager you will have responsibility for a busy and varied caseload of environmental health work throughout Orkney. You will plan and undertake your own investigations, inspections and visits along with taking the necessary actions to provide advice, guidance and support to ensure compliance with the law and that risks to health are appropriately managed.

Good working knowledge of environmental health legislation is required along with the confidence to manage your own casework and conflicting demands with limited management supervision. Some work out of hours may be necessary, as will be the ability to travel throughout Orkney. You must be eligible to work as an EHO in Scotland and membership of REHIS or equivalent is desirable.

We would be particularly pleased to receive applications from EHOs having specific interest and skills in private sector housing and environmental protection. An additional qualification in acoustics and noise control would be advantageous but not essential. You will need to demonstrate a commitment to quality service delivery and self-improvement by undertaking a scheme of relevant continuous professional development and be willing to help out with all aspects of environmental health work within our small team.

Orkney is regularly voted as one of the best places to live in the UK and if you are looking to combine your enthusiasm, knowledge and expertise in environmental health with an excellent quality of life, then we would love to hear from you.

A working knowledge of IT applications, particularly in relation to Microsoft Office and other database management systems is essential (a working knowledge of CIVICA Authority Public Protection software would be an advantage).

This post is subject to basic Disclosure Scotland clearance.

You would be required to hold a current full UK driver’s licence.

Prospective applicants are invited to discuss the post by contacting Nick Long, Service Manager (Environmental Health), E-mail nick.long@orkney.gov.uk or telephone 01856 873535.

Closing Date: Sunday 25 August 2024.

Please note that interview and relocation expenses will be paid for this post, in accordance with Council Policy.
