In 2025, Food Standards Scotland published three reports, providing insights into the Out of Home (OOH) environment, in Scotland. This research includes:
- An overview of food and drink purchasing behaviour in the out of home environment in Scotland and Great Britain during 2022/23.
- Investigating the impact of promotions and other marketing strategies on consumer purchasing behaviours when ordering OOH in Scotland, using digital platforms.
- Insight into the nutritional value and portion size of popular take-away foods available from small, independent OOH outlets across Scotland, determined using laboratory analysis.
Food Standards Scotland will host a webinar to present the findings of this research on 24 September 2025 at 12:30pm. The webinar is endorsed as CPD by the Association for Nutrition and will be hosted on MS Teams.
This research emphasises the need for a collective effort to support ongoing policy development in Scotland aimed at supporting healthier diets by improving the food environment. Food Standards Scotland will use the data from these reports to drive, influence and monitor public health nutrition policies focused on improving the out of home environment and diet of the population in Scotland.
