REHIS has called on MSPs to support the proposed Private Member's Bill to regulate sunbed salons. Details of the Bill have been put out to consultation prior to formal tabling in the Scottish Parliament, by Ken Macintosh, Labour MSP for Eastwood. The Institute is currently carrying out a survey of the use of sunbeds throughout Scotland and problems which arise through their use. See press release
The inaugural REHIS Roadshow was hosted by South Ayrshire Council at the impressive County Buildings, Ayr on Wednesday 26 April.
Delegates heard presentations from Tom Bell, Chief Executive; Val Cameron, Director of Professional Development; and Graham Walker, Director of Training.
Although no official nationwide statistics are yet available, it appears to have been well received by owners of premises, their staff and their customers.
Initial reports from EHOs suggest that, both in the commercial sector and among the public, there has been overwhelming compliance, with only a handful of minor issues.
Martin Keeley (pictured), a Chartered Environmental Health Officer working for East Dunbartonshire Council, has won the competition open to all members to be nominated for a delegate's place at the 9th World Congress in Environmental Health being held in Dublin in June of this year. Martin will accompany the two official delegates travelling, namely the President, John Stirling and the Senior Vice President, Bernard Forteath.
A new elementary training course, organised jointly by REHIS and a company called Tactics Management, has been launched. It is designed for employers who have their workers' safety in mind.

Over 1 million employees in Great Britain are exposed to levels of noise which put their hearing at risk. Employers must:- Assess the risks to employees from noise at work; Take action to reduce the noise exposure that produces those risks; Provide employees with hearing protection if you cannot reduce the noise exposure enough by using other methods; Make sure the legal limits on noise exposure are not exceeded; Provide employees with information, instruction and training; Carry out health surveillance where there is a risk to health.
