Aim:

To raise awareness nationally of the public health priority relating to ticks and Lyme disease in the Outer Hebrides and to explore possible interventions and next steps.

Target audience: This event will be of particular interest to a wide range of practitioners who have involvement in the public health aspects of ticks and Lyme disease including public health professionals, land management staff, animal health colleagues, environmental health professionals and clinicians.

Certificates of attendance will be available for CPD purposes.

Objectives:

• To present current knowledge in relation to the burden of ticks in the Outer Hebrides.

• To consider the potential human health impact of a range of tick-borne diseases, particularly Lyme disease, in the Outer Hebrides.

• Consider how the Outer Hebrides’ experience can be applied to the wider Scottish context in relation to ticks and Lyme disease.

• To identify key knowledge gaps and agree next steps.

Format of the day:

The event will combine presentations covering local and national perspectives and facilitated small groups working to help identify knowledge gaps and next steps.

By the end of the session, delegates will be able to:

• Describe the life cycle of Ixodes ricinus and its role in the transmission of infections to humans.

• Understand the transmission of Borrelia species including hosts and vectors.

• Understand the epidemiology of Lyme disease in Scotland and the Outer Hebrides in particular.

• Discuss key Lyme disease interventions.

• Describe current knowledge gaps in relation to ticks and Lyme disease in Scotland.
