Scotland’s track record in combating ‘healthcare associated infections’ (HAI) has attracted praise from experts at home and abroad in recent years, with incidences of infections in steady decline following numerous initiatives, extra funding, ambitious targets and a zero tolerance approach to non-compliance.
Such progress faces numerous challenges in the coming years, including budgets under severe pressure, and especially the steadily declining utility of antibiotics, heralding what may be “end of modern medicine as we know it”
