OPPORTUNITY FOR ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS WITH HOUSING AND PROPERTY EXPERIENCE
The Tribunals (Scotland) Act 2014 creates a new, simplified statutory framework for tribunals in Scotland, bringing existing tribunal jurisdictions together and providing a structure for new jurisdictions. The Act creates two new tribunals, the First-Tier Tribunal for Scotland and the Upper Tribunal for Scotland, known collectively as the Scottish Tribunals. The Judicial Appointments Board for Scotland invites applications from suitably qualified individuals who wish to be considered for appointment to the First-Tier Tribunal for Scotland, Housing and Property Chamber. The Board is seeking 51 legal members and 31 ordinary members with housing experience to work in various locations across Scotland. The posts are part-time and paid on a daily fee basis. Legal Members: A person is eligible to be a legal member if the person is practising, and has practised for a period of not less than 5 years, as a solicitor or advocate in Scotland or has had previous engagement in practice for a period of not less than 5 years as a solicitor or advocate in Scotland and subsequent engagement in any of the activities listed below. The activities are: •Exercising judicial functions in any court or tribunal; •Practice or employment as a lawyer of any kind; •Teaching or researching law at or for an educational institution. The Legal Members Daily Sitting Fee is £320. Ordinary Members: Must have substantial relevant housing or property experience. For this role relevant experience means in: •Matters relating to landlord or tenant relationships; •Housing matters; or •Land and property management matters. The Ordinary Members Daily Sitting Fee is £168. The appointment will commence on 1 September 2017 to allow relevant training to take place. The successful applicant will not be asked to hear cases until 1 December 2017 when the private rented sector and letting agents work commences. Applicants should note that the Tribunals (Scotland) Act 2014 added tribunal members to the list of judicial officers who were subject to the retirement provisions contained within the Judicial Pensions and Retirement Act 1993.
